Hygiene FAQs
Do I need x-rays?
In order for your dental hygienist and Dr. Lonergan to provide a thorough exam, dental x-rays are necessary. We recommend x-rays for your dental checkup appointments every 6 months to a year which allows us to see tooth structure as well as periodontal health that is not visible through an intraoral exam. If you have recently had x-rays taken at another office, please contact us at Patrick Lonergan DDS Phone Number (504) 887-1700 to make arrangements and have your x-rays sent to us. Patients always have full autonomy in their oral healthcare decisions.
Do I need fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that enforces tooth structure to make it stronger. In office fluoride treatment is topical only. It is not ingested or systemic. We recommend topical fluoride treatment for patients 18 years of age and younger. Please see our Teeth Cleaning page under Preventive Care for more information on Fluoride.
How often do I need a teeth cleaning?
Most healthy patients should have their teeth cleaned and examined every 6 months. Some patients with oral health concerns may need more frequent dental cleanings and exams. You can discuss with your dental hygienist and Dr. Lonergan about what the best frequency of visits is for your oral health.
What can I do about my staining? Whitening?
There are different kinds of stain caused by different factors and hence different ways to treat each stain. While some stain can be removed during your professional dental cleaning appointments, others may require whitening trays or strips. Talk with one of our dental hygienists about your staining concerns for the best stain treatment and optimal whitening results.
I haven’t had my teeth cleaned in years. How long will it take? How many appointments will I need?
If it has been a while since your last dental cleaning there is no need to worry! When you make an appointment please let one of our staff members know how long it has been so we can schedule you for the appropriate amount of time. Dental cleaning appointments can be anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes. Most patients are able to have their teeth cleaned in one visit. However, in some cases, we will reappoint a patient to allow some healing to progress and inflammation to subside while finishing the cleaning at a second appointment.
